The Kitchen

January 24, 2009 by suburbanmummyuk

I have been on a cooking course a long time ago it was to learn how to cook Moroccan food, I enjoyed it except the sitting down with a bunch of strangers while we all tasted what we had made, I just wanted to take my preserved lemons and leave.

I am fickle when it comes to cooking on one hand I love it. I love having lots of spices and herbs and ingredients and frying things in a Wok, I love to make Japanese food and other Asian styles. I’d say that is my favourite type of cooking.

Then we have the “boring English food” which I do make a lot cottage pie with salads etc. This is the bit I hate, it’s so boring, it is effortless which is why I make it as I am often so busy during the week, and lets face it, when you have a cranky baby 5 foot away hyperventilating while you get irritated with your electronic scales and spill flour everywhere is not my idea of fun after a day of activities or theirs hence cottage pie.

But often on the weekends I will make Teryaki Salmon on a bed of rice, with beansprouts and sliced carrots and mange tout Unal keeps the kids occupied and I cook, and I love it. I love measuring it all out and I LOVE making it look pretty on the plate. I love to make little Asian condiments and serve them on little Japanese plates which I want more of, Unal if you’re reading that’s a hint lol.

But I want more I want to learn more, I am not to good at reading cook books, I can read (Just) I am just not good at the following part I think my brain switches off or something I miss a VITAL part of the recipe and carry on and serve it only for Masterchef Unal to say “where is this” or “This is missing something” And for me to then remember what it was and say “oh ya you know I read that and thought oh look at that pretty picture” and forgot it.

What I really like and this isn’t just for cooking is I like to be taught, must be from my total lack of education. I thrive on watching someone teach, they have to be captivating though, and draw me in, please don’t repeat yourself over and over I am not stupid I got it the first time if I didn’t the 2nd reminder will be more than enough. I don’t want to learn one thing and then sit around watching the oven clock tick over and see the 1 dish I made OH no I want to learn at least 2-3 new things.

I recently discovered this place The Kitchen and let me tell you I am totally going to do this it looks fanastic and it doesn’t take up your whole day, and it doesn’t take up your weekend family time and you get to choose what you want to cook, you get to choose how much money you want to spend, and you have a great chef helping you to acheive this while also learning how to cook properly.

Unal is sick of me talking about this place, I mentioned it for the 485739875 time this morning and he “sighed ” He won’t be sighing when I can cook him delicious meals. Although he might expect me to cook 5 meals in 2 hours on a regular basis then he can forget it lol & I will be the one sighing!

Oh yes This is something I am going to do for myself this year and I can’t wait! I’ll let you know when I go and how it went!
